Aims of the Project
The group centres around these aims;
- to reduce the isolation experienced by young lesbians, gay men and Bisexual.
- to raise young people's self-esteem and develop a postive self-identity.
- to challenge homophobia and heterosexism within an enviroment of equal opportunties.
Background
Freedom
Youth opened in July 1995,and in June 1996 was awarded funding
from the National Lottery. This funding allowed the group to develop
services for LGB (Lesbians, Gay and Bisexual.) young people across
Bristol and the old Avon area. Sadly the funding ran out in 1999 and
the youth project has survived by offering a weekly drop-in, with
funding from Bristol City Council's Young People's Services.for several years.
Present
- Freedom Youth goes mainstream!!
On the 8th November 05. Freedom Youth held their
final Annual General meeting as a voluntary sector youth group.
It was decided by the Freedom management committee that due to
staffing problems, funding and time restraints of the members of
the committee, it was time to look at other ways of Freedom Youth
being delivered. After consultation with Bristol City Council's
Young People's Services who had supported the project throughout, it was agreed that the project would be taken on by Young People's
Services inclusion team who have an LGB young people's project.

The project is now statutory funded and part of
mainstream youth services.
